lately reading: a renewed love for for books (and audiobooks!)

Over the past few months, I’ve read more books than I have in the last few years combined—and I’m loving it.

I’m not entirely sure what sparked this sudden shift, but I have a feeling it has something to do with my kids getting a little older and me finally finding pockets of quiet time again. Whether it’s curling up in my sunroom with a cup of something warm and the light pouring in, or popping in my AirPods while painting furniture or baking—books have become a steady companion in my day-to-day life.

And yes, I’m a huge fan of audiobooks. I don’t love when people act like audiobooks “don’t count.” They absolutely do. Listening while I’m working with my hands or making dinner has allowed me to enjoy so many more stories, and that’s something worth celebrating.

Here are the books I’ve read recently—and really enjoyed:

1. Blob by Maggie Su

Strange in the best way. This one felt like a dream: funny, fragmented, deeply emotional, and unexpected. A short but lingering read.

2. Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

Equal parts chaotic and heartwarming. A hostage situation that turns into something much more tender and human.

3. Pineapple Street by Jenny Jackson

A smart, gossipy glimpse into the lives of a wealthy Brooklyn family. Funny, observant, and full of juicy, layered characters.

4. All Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng

A haunting story set in a near-future America. It left me feeling bleak because with everything happening in the world the events of the book hit a little too close to home, but an important read nonetheless.

5. All Fours by Miranda July

Weird, raw, and uniquely Miranda July. This book had me thinking “where on earth is she going with this” more than anything I’ve read for a long time. Surprising and very explicit content - don’t say I didn’t warn you! This book for me really helped me shake things up and get out of the book rut I was in. If you need something different this might be the one.

6. Intermezzo by Sally Rooney

Low on action but full of emotion and exploration of the power dynamics in relationships. A little frustrating at times because I wanted to shake a few of the main characters for the choices they made, but that can be the mark of an affecting story.

7. Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

An epic and gritty reimagining of David Copperfield, set in Appalachia. Heartbreaking and unforgettable.

8. First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston

A con artist thriller I devoured quickly. Super fun and fast-paced. I’ll admit I am a bit of a cynic and sometimes thrillers make me roll my eyes at the convenient plot twists at the end - and for me this was no exception. Still a fun read.

9. The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine

Deliciously dramatic. Glamour, secrets, and a major twist I didn’t see coming.

Getting back into reading—really reading—has felt like reconnecting with a part of myself I didn’t realize I was missing. Whether through headphones or hardcovers, these stories have brought joy, escape, and a lot of reflection.

Let me know if you’ve read any of these—or if you have a recommendation for what I should dive into next.

Until next time,

Lisa
