furniture diaries: from dusty garage to regal beauty

furniture diaries: from dusty garage to regal beauty

There’s just something about a black writing desk with gold knobs that makes me feel like I could magically transform into the kind of person who writes thank you notes and neat cursive in a leather bound journal.

For a few months, my office situation had been laughable. The last desk I refinished sold quickly — great for my wallet, less great for my workspace. My “temporary solution” was a wobbly little vintage folding card table. It’s cute, but it leans so dramatically to one side that visitors have openly asked if my computer was about to slide right off. For added fun, it’s approximately child-height, so I’ve basically been typing with my shoulders up around my ears.

So yes, I was motivated to find a replacement. But as anyone who flips furniture knows, it’s not just about finding the right piece — it’s about finding the right deal. And lately, everyone on Marketplace seems to think their scratched-up, 1990s, laminate-topped dresser is worth $200 minimum.

Finally, my patience paid off. I spotted the perfect desk — only 45 minutes away. But I’d promised myself a few road trips this fall in search of the right pieces, because when you live in a small town, options are… limited.

So I grabbed a coffee, queued up my audiobook, and hit the road. It was one of those gorgeous fall days where even a furniture pickup feels romantic. The desk had been sitting in a garage collecting dust, but I could see its potential immediately.

It was shiny — like, very shiny — so I sanded it down and gave it a solid coat of primer. (I don’t always bother with primer for dark colours, but this finish was so glossy it needed it.) Then came the paint.

Here’s the thing: I love Benjamin Moore’s furniture and cabinet paint for the finish it gives — that smooth, enamel-like look. But actually using it? Low-key hate it. I’m a Fusion girl through and through. Benjamin Moore drips if you even look at it wrong. But I persevered, swore only a reasonable amount, and got it done.

The hardware got a serious scrub with Bar Keepers Friend and came back to life beautifully — which is a rare treat because I usually end up replacing knobs entirely. I lined the drawers with the cutest witchy mushroom print (because why shouldn’t your office storage have a fun little secret?). Finally, I gave the top a coat of wax for protection.

And just like that — from dusty garage to stately beauty.

The last time I refinished a desk, it sold instantly, so who knows — maybe I’ll actually get to enjoy this one for a few days before it’s gone.

What do you think — will it fly off Marketplace, or will it stay with me just long enough to make me fall in love and regret selling it?
