back to school resolutions (aka my real new year)
Share
Ten years of teaching preschool will do weird things to your internal calendar. January? Meh. Just a cold month where you make a lot of soup and go to bed early out of boredom.
But September? Oh, September is my New Year. I may not be teaching these days but I still crave the feeling of a freshly stocked classroom, a folder bursting with lesson plan ideas, the crisp mornings that call for our beloved sweaters. After a hot, messy, delightfully chaotic summer, September feels like a restart button.
So, like any sane business owner/baker/furniture painter/gift box assembler/human with too many hobbies, I make back-to-school resolutions—for both my business and my life.
new bakery offerings and subscription packages

I’ve been cooking up (literally) some cozy fall flavors and dreaming up new ways to get them into your hands. I recently launched my new Thrifted to Gifted collection of gift baskets as well as Bakery Boxes to make gift giving easy and personal. Check them out under the “shop gifts” tab.
A sourdough subscription series may be in the works too!
daily movement

A few years ago, I finally broke up with the toxic early-2000s “thin at all costs” culture and started working out to get strong. Best. Decision. Ever. I took a break from the gym over the summer, but the “I’ll just do a quick home workout” plan turned into “I’ll just think about doing a quick home workout.” September means picking up the weights again—and maybe dusting them first.
finish the house projects (seriously)
Why is it that every DIY project in my house is 85% done? My mudroom wallpaper has been patiently waiting for me to finish it for approximately forever. Our downstairs bathroom is the worst and my own indecision has kept us from starting anything. This is the year. Or at least, this is the September.
keep the reading spree alive

This summer, I rediscovered reading in a big way, but for years I was stuck in a huge rut of thrillers that felt unsatisfying (I can’t read one more book where a married couple is harbouring dangerous secrets behind closed doors and things are not as they seem). I’m branching out and deliberately trying new genres and weird titles to shake things up. Life is too short to read books that are only okay.
make soap, dammit
I have had soap-making supplies gathering dust for over a year. There is literally no reason I haven’t done this yet except procrastination and unfounded fears I’ll manage to blow myself up. September feels like a good time to dive in an finally try it.
work on my book
I’ve been working away at a cookbook, partly to keep a proper copy of all my go-to recipes and partly for my own amusement. Lately, I’ve lost some steam. But the thing about September is—it sometimes gives you that fresh energy to get going once again.
Here’s to September—the real New Year. May your pencils stay sharp, your coffee stay hot, and your to-do list finally get some satisfying check marks.
