a sweet summer escape: prince edward island

Sometimes the best way to reset your creativity is to step away for a bit—and that’s exactly what we did. Our family recently spent a week exploring the beauty of Prince Edward Island, and it was everything we hoped for: slow mornings, salty air, red sand beaches, and more ice cream than I care to admit. I wanted to share a few highlights with you—not only as a peek into our trip, but also as a little inspiration for your own summer escape.

red sand beaches & chasing lighthouses

Travelling with kids meant a lot of time at the beach. We stayed near Cavendish on the north shore, close to some great beaches and the famous Anne of Green Gables sites (my childhood self was PUMPED). We expected the beaches in mid-July to be absolutely packed but everywhere we went we found pleasantly spacious, even at the most crowded moments. Most morning we bought coffee and treats from Willow Bakery & Cafe and headed to the beach early for sandcastles and wave jumping.

There is something so romantic and dramatic about lighthouse that I couldn't get enough. A few of our drives centred around visiting these historic beauties, which almost always have a gorgeous beach nearby. That and lobster - I like lobster a lot but my husband LOVES it so finding lobster rolls was also a priority!

coastal charm & decor inspo

One thing I always love to notice when we travel is the local decor and architecture—and PEI did not disappoint. The homes were so full of character: bright-colored buildings, vintage shutters, and lots of nautical touches. I fell in love with the cozy front porches and weathered shingles everywhere. I came back itching to add a few coastal touches to our own space. (Driftwood centerpiece, anyone?)

a taste of the island

Of course, no trip is complete without food—and PEI is a little food lover’s dream. We indulged in seafood chowder, fresh mussels, and buttery lobster rolls. Our cottage was near an oyster farm and we ended up attending a "shuck & learn" session, leaving with a box of fresh oysters to shuck at home. On the last night we attended a good old fashioned lobster supper at New Glasgow Lobster Suppers and my husband was in absolute paradise. As great as the lobster and sides were, my heart was stolen my the lemon meringue pie that came at the end. I'd forgotten what a perfectly sweet and tart finish it makes for a summer meal.

Stay tuned—I’m working on a recipe inspired by that very dessert. It’ll be the perfect cozy summer treat.

grateful for the getaway

Sometimes it’s the simplest trips that leave the biggest impression. We didn’t over-plan, we didn’t rush, and somehow those slow, quiet days became some of our most treasured memories. If you’ve ever considered a trip to Prince Edward Island—do it. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and full of heart.

Now we’re back home, unpacking sandy shoes and souvenirs, and I’m feeling refreshed and ready to get back to my usual projects—with a little more salt and sea in my soul.

Have you ever visited PEI or taken a memorable summer road trip? I’d love to hear where you’ve been wandering this season.

Until next time,
Lisa
